RefWorks


What is RefWorks?


RefWorks is a Web-based bibliographic management tool used to build and modify personal databases of references. RefWorks enables users to save, search, and format bibliographic information from online databases, Library catalogues and webpages. Users can insert references from their RefWorks database into essays and research papers and automatically generate formatted bibliographies in their selected referencing style eg: APA 5th, Harvard etc.

Get started with RefWorks


When you access RefWorks for the first time you will be required to set up an individual account with your own personal login and password. Once you have set up your account just enter your Log-in Name and Password and click Login to access your personal RefWorks database.

  1. Set up a RefWorks Individual Account

    1. Go to RefWorks
    2. Click signup for an Individual Account
    3. Complete the form - making sure you
      enter your Macquarie University student
      or staff email address ie:
      firstname.lastname@students.mq.edu.au
    4. Click on Register

    Go to the RefWorks tutorial basics to discover the essential features of RefWorks including creating your database, managing your references and generating bibliographies.
  2. Add references to your RefWorks database

    When you find useful articles or other references in a database or catalogue search, “mark” these references and export them directly to into your RefWorks database. Each database or catalogue is different and the RefWorks export option may not always be immediately evident. Please note that export options are often located with the Save function.

    Direct export
    Here is a list of databases platforms providing direct export access to RefWorks.

    Imported references
    Where no direct export option is available, references can be saved and then imported into RefWorks. A filter contains all the information necessary to enable the import process. Here is a list of import filters included with RefWorks.

    Referencing styles
    The RefWorks program includes the most commonly used citation styles. Here is a list of output styles currently supported in RefWorks.
  3. Insert in-text references and format a bibliography

    To insert references from your RefWorks database into essays and research papers you will need to download and install the Write-N-Cite plugin for Microsoft Word.

    installing Write-N-Cite
    1. Login to RefWorks
    2. Click on Tools
    3. Select Write-N-Cite and follow the download instructions
    Note:
    Off-campus users must also load the Write-N-Cite proxy Configuration utility for it to work.

    After loading Write-N-Cite: go to Start Menu, select Programs > RefWorks > WNC Proxy Configuration Utility and add the following URL: http://simsrad.net.ocs.mq.edu.au/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true

RefShare


RefShare is a tool for the global dissemination and publication of databases and bibliographies. RefShare provides RefWorks users with a quick and easy way to share their research information, further enhancing collaborative research. Users can share their RefWorks references with both members of their own institution and globally with any researcher having Internet access.

Compatibility


RefWorks is compatible with the following:

Browsers
Word Processors
You can also use any word processor including Ami-Pro, FrameMaker, OpenOffice, StarOffice, Word Perfect or any other program which allows you to save your files as RTF.

Note: Write-N-Cite is only compatible with MS Word. All other word processing software users should use One Line/Cite View for their documents.

Write-N-Cite for Windows is compatible with the following applications:
Office 2007 (PC) works with the new version of Write-N-Cite III.  You can download WNC III  - or install it from under the Tools menu in your RefWorks account/

Write-N-Cite for Macintosh is compatible with the following applications:
