Opening Hours: 9 - 5 Monday to Friday - Centre closed when teaching classes. Location: 1st Floor, Medical School North Wing, Frome Road The Centre is designed as a teaching and learning area. Students can study in private, or participate in tutorial-like assignments. With the creation of a Chair in Physical Anthropology and Comparative Anatomy, the Centre's comparative anatomy display is currently being revamped. There is a good skull collection of humans (modern and ancient) and animals. In addition, whole animal displays are being reconstructed; one in particular that has received media attention is the elephant from the Adelaide Zoo. (500 objects; started 1885; 0.02 staff)

National significance: terracotta sarcophagus and its lid with figural sculpture from the Republican period of Etruria (probably Tarquinia). International significance: Palaeolithic and Neolithic artefacts from the Near East; 18th century Dynasty Egyptian texts; pottery from Beni Hasan in Egypt and Ur in Mesopotamia. All artefacts from late Republican and Imperial periods of Rome (including pottery and early blown glass, coins, sculptural and wall-painting fragments); a rare funerary mosaic from Edessa; papyrus texts. Also an Attic marble lekythos fragment, pottery and sculpture; South Italian pottery and rare Ptolemaic glass inlays from Alexandria.

Important research collection; cabinets and preventive conservation recently
upgraded (250,000 specimens; established 1928; 0.75 staff) National and international significance: Duncan Swan Insect Collection of 300,000 specimens. It is co-located with the South Australian Research and Development Institute collection. Of particular importance are the Orthoptera, scale insects and parasitic wasps relevant to biological control. There are 250 paratypes (the holotypes of which are in the Australian National Insect Collection). The collection is described and catalogued in Austin and Burnycoczky (1990, Transactions of the Royal Society of South Australia 114: 47-53

Opening Hours: 9 am - 5 pm, Monday - Friday Location: Waite Campus Main Building, Room S103 Research collection Slide collections (approx 20,000); plus vials of wet material; established 1973 National and international significance: 30,000 slides of nematodes mounted in glycerol and 300 vials in fixative. It is the largest collection of Australian plant-parasitic nematodes in the world. There is a significant collection of entomophilic nematodes from Australia. The collection holds holotypic material and paratypes of 50 species, the holotypes of which are held in the South Australian and Queensland museums.
