The Games of the Gods

An exhibition examining how sport and religion combined in ancient Greece to create festival games in honour of various gods. The history and context of the games were not simply limited to those held at Olympia and Nemea to celebrate the king of their gods, Zeus Olympia. Sporting festivals were also held at Isthmia, near Corinth, for Poeidon; at Delphi and the island of Delos for Apollo; and at Athens for Athena Polias. Games for women contestants only were celebrted at Olympia for Hera, and at Brauron for Artemis. This exhibition includes descriptive wall panels, photographs, books and artefacts to reveal the rich legacy and tradition of sporting festivals in ancient Greece - and its links to the current year 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and the planned 2004 Games in Athens.
