Artefacts/Objects

The range of items whose provenance can be traced back to Lachlan and Elizabeth Macquarie is extensive. There are a number of known objects held in public institutions and private collections in Britain and Australia. These have appeared at various times on public display or in publications examining the historical legacy of the Macquaries. Current examples include: Macquarie Collector's Chest at the Mitchell Library, Sydney, the Macquarie Armchair at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, and the Macquarie Chair at Macquarie University Library, Sydney.

However, no consolidated list of personal items has ever been prepared, and such a task of identification would necessarily always remain incomplete. Nevertheless, a representative selection may provide us with a window of understanding into the world of the Macquaries. The following items are a small beginning...
