Space, Food, Drink, Noise and Building Facilities
"There are no seats or desk space in the Library" and "The Library is too noisy, people are talking all the time"
The Library provides as many desks and seats as space will allow. Please see the Use of Study Rooms and Study Desks (Unattended Items) for our policy on the appropriate use of study rooms and desksStarting from Semester 2 2007, the Library has introduced a new policy to provide a more comfortable place for study and research. On Level 1 and Level 2 of the Library you will be able to quiet group work or work individually, you can also use your mobile for quiet call and texting. Level 3 and 4 are now Quiet Space for individual study. Although our Library staff and Security will monitor these quiet areas as much as possible, we do need our clients to respect each other to make the system work.
"Can you stop people smoking outside the Library? It is not fair for non-smokers to put up with the cigarette smoking over there"
We agree that it is a health concern for non-smokers having to tolerate the smell and smoke generated by smokers at the front of the Library. We had put up signs around the area and asked security staff to help moving smokers back from the Library doors. However, some smoking clients still persist in sitting on the seats which are outside the doors to have their cigarettes. We will ask the security staff on duty to patrol this on a regular basis. This will not, of course, stop people smoking in this area again when security staff are not around but we will endeavour to reinforce this message at every opportunity."Lady's toilets are always in a HUGE mess"
All toilets in the Library are cleaned at regular intervals during the day, by cleaners employed by the University. At peak times such as exam times the Library arranges more frequent cleaning of the toilets and the building in general, including on weekends. However, co-operation is needed from our clients to keep the place neat and clean."It would be very handy to have hooks or some kind of hanger on the toilet doors (from inside) while using the toilets"
As past experience showed, bags or personal items hung on the hooks of toilet doors became easy targets for thieves in the Library. As a result hooks were removed from the cubicle doors of public toilets.Computer and Network
"The wireless network is slow, and always disconnected!"
In May 2007 ITS and the Library had upgraded wireless network facilities in the building by:- Increasing the number of access points with more effective range for increased network coverage.
- Relocating current access points from walls to ceilings to reduce interference from shelves and concrete walls.
However, clients need to remember that:
- Wireless coverage is not "mobile" - so users have to re-establish their connection if they move from one place to another in the Library.
- Metal library shelves and concrete pillars can interfere with the transmission of signals.
- Unlike the wired network which provides an dedicated bandwidth for each connection, the wireless network is shared bandwidth. The available bandwidth at each access point is shared amongst all users connected to the access point. For example if all users are sending large amounts of data, generally the slower the connection.
- The wireless network basically runs at a slower speed when compared to wired network.
"The Library needs more computers, especially ones which have Microsoft Word as well."
After the new PC replacement project, except for specialty PC for certain databases, most PCs in the Library are equipped with Office 2003. However, Library PCs are provided for research and academic use only. For general and recreational use, for example checking personal email and browsing the web, clients should go to the computer labs in building C5C.Also the Library has set up a new laptop lounge area on Level 1. Laptop users can now have a designated area to use their laptops without risking their cables dangerously running across the floor.
Finding Things in the Library
"Use Dewey Decimal System! "
When Macquarie University was established in 1966, it was decided to adopt the LC Classification Scheme as a means of quickly organising the Library collection. It is considered that Library of Congress Classification offers students and staff great flexibility and comprehensiveness. If your feedback is not addressed here please use the Feedback Form to let us know your concerns.
